Really, but the main reason GitS is meaningful for me it's because I fear not being in control of shaping my own identity, like I want to be totally in control, but the acumulation of life experiences and the demands of different social stages and situations slowly alters that pure sense of identity we had from childhood, so GitS speaks to me despite dealing with cyborgs, because the notion of Self is like the notion of Time, one of the fundamental dillemas in philsophy. 2) Angel's Egg is just very Ni, not Ne at all, and like Ghost in the Shell, it's aesthetically compelling all way through. Regarding the "shallowness" thing, within the timeframe of a short movie, I generally find it more effective to present things which stimulate thought in a way that doesn't take away from the story and visuals, so that you can think about it *after* watching it. Not all ISTPs have to be bad-ass, but there's still this feeling of being in the moment, being inside their physicality that I just don't see with people like Oshii or Otomo. Making a very slow, visually interesting movie full of quick references to difficult topics (2001, Ghost in the Shell, etc. I have to admit this one too: about Oshii probably being ISTP, not the value of Ghost in the Shell or The Matrix (the fact that Ghost in the Shell understands its implications while Matrix doesn't -or at least not the first movie- still remains; also the fact that 2001 inspired so many people about space exploration still remains even if that might have been mainly visual. As a Ne user I would like to come with my own philosophical ideas even when they're very shallow than borrow from others. The Matrix took inspiration from it yet they ruined it because it made it feel so artificial, but in the original there's this fluidity to it that feels very organic. Then there's the variety, it goes from modern SF city to Hong Kong inspired regions effortlesly, and it's all very visually compelling despite how different it is. Even people like Kubrick or Riddley Scott have this one-of-the-guys thing to them. Honestly, how an INTP could excel so much in the aesthetics department, and the totally Ni and nature of Angel's Egg were something that I could never fully match with Oshii as INTP. He's clearly INTP, yet his movies puts huge importance on the visuals, atmosphere and sound. Where do you come with this stuff. Saying that an ISP can create movies like Eraserhead (Lynch) or Angel's Egg (Mamoru Oshii) is like saying ISP have stronger imaginations than INPs, which is nuts. Keeping things "shallow" (as in not elaborate) is thus ideal (at least for me) in the short-film medium. Well, did you even know that 2001 was trying to show you how aliens might just from watching the movie. These are things one can easily miss the first time, so if you are bored by such slow movies it easy to see how you might miss them. There's also a short scene where it's being told humanity would have to be first mentally conditioned for the cultural shock that finding about the existence of such civilization would bring. Maybe the culture in which he leaves is lower on Se physicality in the first place. There also all kinds of other points being made, like how these people depend on the better judgements of their doctors, or these society it's vulnerable to treats due to its overall cyberization (''over-specialization leads to death'). Putting Tarkovsky and Oshii side by side, ignore their genres, and it would makes sense that they would be the same type minus that one is F and the other T. I know that I do that, so it's not weird for an INP director to use a movie in order to indulge in order to visually represent their imagination and give it detail. Anyway: 1)The Matrix is the perfect example of doing a philosophical movie the wrong way. As creators of moods, the kind of "cold" awe to them movies like 2001 have etc. 4)There are plenty of people that find 2001 having more depth than Artur C Clarke's original book or the '95 movie than SAC. I do agree "good visuals" isn't a good argument for Se because you have people like Tim Burton and Winding Refn having great-looking movies, but I think the effort-heavy, careful kind of visuals of something like Angel's Egg are clearly the work of a Se user as opposed to something like Edward Scissorhands, which is more just like, "Hey, let's do quirky and dark. And like I said, Angel's Egg is purely visual. The problem is his pretentious fanbase which tries to act like they are above everyone for watching his stuff and "getting it". I don't neccesarly agree with them, but it's easy to see way, because they put their premises in a larger perspective, and how the human mind would react in such fantastic situations, which is quality SF should be all about. I can get captivated by that. Yet, it can change from that to cyber-punk and then give you this cold sterile but ultra-cool feeling.
